It’s not a wallaby, mate! For the last few years psychedelic-influenced mayhem has seen a major uptick in the musical zeitgeist, with bands like Silversun Pickups, Dirty Projectors, and Animal Collective going mainstream and showing up on place you’d not expect to see psychedelic-influenced mayhem, like (Late Night with David Letterman). Enter three teenagers from Perth, Australia with the unlikely moniker Tame Impala. These thress teenagers started making music under that name in 1999 at the ripe young age of 13, and have now perfected that heavy, fuzzed out rock sound that they began creating over 10 years ago. Their music sounds more like something you’d hear coming from a smoke-filled, …Read On –>

I have known about Mike Giant the graffiti artist for a while now, but it wasn’t until a few years back when I discovered his illustrations and tattooing. Mike Giant is a graffiti artist, tattoo artist, illustrator, skateboarder, fixed gear rider, Buddhist, world traveler, etc., etc. There is so much Mike Giant does that everyone could love at least one aspect of what he works on.
Mike Giant is based out of San Francisco concurrently runs Rebel 8 with Joshy D and also focused on his illustrations, while doing everything else on the side. He was born in Upstate New York and moved to Albuquerque …Read On –>

 Yo,
Last night I went to my friend Joe’s place to chill out and catch up on music news. For those of you who don’t know Joe is an old roommate and current band mate of my other friend Jerm whom I have mentioned in other posts. Anyways, I went over there expecting just to talk for a bit and maybe have a beer or two, but I was in for a surprise. Joe had invited a couple of his other band mates over for a jam session. These two men named Archie and Jason, are two accomplished musicians and can jam on almost any instrument proficiently. The reason I was so …Read On –>

 Hey all, B-to-the-izz-A here,
I want to begin talking about some equipment used in the music world. I will try and make this a consistent thing, probably highlight something different once a week or so. Today I will be talking about the Korg EM-1.
The EM-1 is a music sequencer/synthesizer produced by the Korg company around 2001. I own one myself (bought it around May of 2003) and it was the very first synth I ever owned. What first got me interested in using the sequencer was a chance meeting between myself and some people that would eventually become good friends of mine.
In March of 2003 I went to a house party with …Read On –>

 The Devil's Note by Skinner
This is the first in a weekly series of artists we like at IndieRecon.
Skinner is one of several artists that live in the Surreal Estates in Sacramento, which is a community designed specifically for artists.
I first found out about Skinner through one of my college art teachers and I instantly loved his style. I would say his art draws from mythology, occult folklore, Native American tribal art, demonology, and several other dark overpowering forces. In most of his works he tends to focus on demons, devils, mythical creatures, destruction, wizards, medieval themes, and he uses tons of bright colors. Some of his works have …Read On –>

Today we do a complete ripoff of the Twitter meme and begin a weekly series about the music that we have discovered over the past week titled, curiously, Music Monday. Here is my first contribution.
Between the Buried and Me – “The Great Misdirect” (Victory, 2009)
This record really gets me moving when I play it REALLY LOUD. This follow-up to 2007′s Colors sees the band moving in an even more progressive direction, building on the orchestral foundation they build with Colors. This is a thematically dense record, with the band ripping through only 6 songs in 60 minutes. The crescendo of the album, the 18-minute-long “Swim To The Moon”, sounds like …Read On –>

 Hello,
In following up with last week’s post about diggin the crates I thought I might share with you some of my personal collection. These days with everything going digital it’s actually quite easy to find MP3′s of most any kind of music, samples or otherwise. Now, I am not strictly a vinyl fiend, but it was my parents record collection that lured me into beat making. I remember back in 1995 or so when Tupac’s “All Eyez on Me,” album was released. You could not go anywhere without hearing some of the hits off of that album. Around this same time my mother had heard the song “How Do U Want …Read On –>

 What up,
As I am into anything musically related I thought I might talk about one of my favorite hip-hop groups today; “The People Under the Stairs.” I won’t give a complete background as you can read that HERE, but my favorite thing about this group is the hard to find and eclectic samples they use in their songs. I won’t get into the sampling debate as that is for a post in the future, but as far as truly mixing it up and using samples in a tasteful way, PUTS in one of the best. I dabble in all sorts of music and I make beats from time to time (I …Read On –>

For all you hardcore/metal fans out there here’s a blast from the past: Harkonen (myspace link). Although this band broke up in 2005, the current members reunited for a kick ass show at the Comet Tavern in Seattle New Year’s Eve. Unfortunately for me I was busy elsewhere and didnt get myself a ticket, but I did stop by and talk to my friends about the show. The tavern was wall to wall packed and fools like myself were outside in the rain looking to score a last min ticket (to no avail I imagine). I’ll have to dig around a bit and I can’t make any promises, but I will …Read On –>

Happy 2010 everyone, I know I have gone on a rant like this before (Punk Rock) but I just had to say something. Rolling Stone recently posted their top choices for the decade “2000-2009,” and they gave Green Day band of the decade. Now I am not too particularly upset with this choice as I don’t pay much attention to Rolling Stone or Green Day that much anymore. However, I thought RS was at least above some of the major-major music outlets, like MTV or Hot Topic for example. The Choice of Green Day is in my opinion just a cop-out and straight lazy. No wonder so many think the genre …Read On –>
