Music Monday, Vol. 1

Today we do a complete ripoff of the Twitter meme and begin a weekly series about the music that we have discovered over the past week titled, curiously, Music Monday. Here is my first contribution.

Between the Buried and Me – “The Great Misdirect” (Victory, 2009)Between The Buried And Me - The Great Misdirect Cover

This record really gets me moving when I play it REALLY LOUD. This follow-up to 2007′s Colors sees the band moving in an even more progressive direction, building on the orchestral foundation they build with Colors. This is a thematically dense record, with the band ripping through only 6 songs in 60 minutes. The crescendo of the album, the 18-minute-long “Swim To The Moon”, sounds like the bastard child of The Who, Frank Zappa, Dream Theater, and Mastodon.

The album itself seems to be more cohesive conceptually, but I found this track particular pleasing in its focus. The tempo stays pretty consistent throughout, transitioning between metal breakdowns and softer acoustic-driven commentary. This is a heavy record, but it is one of the most musical and orchestral that I have heard in this genre to date.

I am going to take this album on a run tonight to see how well it keeps pace with me.
